dear internet doctor friends (yep that's you!)

I need help with a diagnosis, my internet pseudo-docta friends.

I have been having this problem for awhile now. (like, uh, months.) (maybe 4? 5?)

It all began when I left my wedding rings off one summer day (oh glorious summer sun I miss you and your tan-giving, cancer-causing rays) and my ringline (which was a nice, pale white) got sunburned. Me? Tan. Ring Finger? Burned in a perfect line. It itched. It peeled. It went away (mostly). I finally put my rings back on. And THIS happened:

and keeps happening over and over and over. i leave them off, let it heal, put them back on, and BAM. Bright, angry red ringline. HEEEEEEEEEELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. i have worn those rings (both are white gold) for years without so much of an itch.

SO BASICALLY what i want you to tell me is: 1. i don't have to see a doctor 2. it will go away!

no, really, what should i do?

(i know this is a VERY exciting saturday night post. weekend recap will, in fact, be more entertaining (hopefully!)

  1. That is odd. I have no idea. Have you tried googling it. (Yep, that's all I got)

  2. You probably have developed a skin sensitivity to your rings.....uhm, hate to tell you this. It happens to people all the time is common. No matter how long you keep the rings off, it will still come back becasue your skin basically has "memory" to this allergic reaction. I would try having your rings re-dipped :(

  3. I'm going to be keeping an eye on these comments from all those web md's out there because a fairly similar thing started happening to me lately too! My rash isn't as red as yours, but it's there. Kind of scaly and weird. I have noticed that it gets a lot worse any time my hands are wet. I make sure my fingers are 100% dry before I put my ring back on, and that helps immensely. But it's still not GONE. So I'm all ears (eyes) for any advice you receive.

  4. Gold rings are made with alloys, so you might be reacting to one in your ring-- most likely nickle. Probably what happened is you wore your rings for so long, getting them wet, dirty, etc, which breaks down the nickle... blah blah chemical stuff, and then your skin is exposed to the nickle and viola. Breakout. Sunburn also can make your skin more sensitive to the nickle, even if the burn is healed.

I agree with Natalie. Try having them redipped.

  5. I have a faint memory of something similar happening to me with a ring back in college (high school?). It eventually stopped happening, I think. It sounds like folks have already given some good advice as to the causes. Now, for some in-the-meantime suggestions for making your finger heal...I'd try Aquaphor or lanolin. Both have been really good on Sadie's bum and eczema.

  6. Booo! I have no advice on this, but Maria sounds right. That makes sense to me. Major boo, though. :(

  7. I have this too. My finger is all red, scaly and itchy where my ring is. My hypothesis is that it's contact dermatitis from washing our hands so much (hello, poop covered kids) and the soap and water get stuck under our rings causing a skin reaction. When mine gets really bad I put cortisone on every morning and night and it seems to help. Also, give your finger a break for a few days. Oh, and clean your ring. Sometimes the soap gets embedded on all the little cracks and crevices and can irritate you more. Hope this novel helps.

  8. Take the ring to wherever Karl got it and have it cleaned, re-oxidized or whatever they do. Mine are white gold too, and I have to do this so often. If nothing else, they'll look all shiney and brand new again! At least for a few days! Sorry! That is weired it'd start all of a sudden after a sun exposure!
